"I'm at the cabin, Dad." D.J. didn't bother with greetings or lengthy explanations. She had awoken alone in the cabin, the steady thunk-thunk of an ax telling her that McCall was splitting wood for use in their extended stay. She had taken the opportunity to call her father. Now she wanted to finish speaking with him before McCall came inside or Josie showed up. Talking with Ed always left her an emotional wreck.
"You said you'd never set foot there again."
"I had no choice. Someone's trying to kill meto kill us."
"Who's us?"
If D.J. had hoped her father would show some concern over her life being in danger, those hopes died at the cool courtesy in his question. She sighed and rubbed her aching head with her fingers. "I'm on an assignment. A guy named McCallsomeone's trying to kill him. We went to a hotel in Outgamie. After I called in my location to the station four guys showed up with automatic weapons. I got shot, and McCall brought me to Dan."
"Hmm. You okay?"
D.J. blinked at the question. His voice held an emotion she couldn't remember hearing from him before. Could it be concern? Her heart stuttered with hope for a single second before her well-honed protective instincts reared their ugly little heads.
God, I'm so pathetic. One little sign of interest from dear old dad and I'm ready to go home for Christmas.
"Yes," she snapped, the coldness of her voice dashing the tiny flame of warmth within her. "I'll be fine. But I need your help."
